Muscadine Grapes

Muscadine grapes grow only in the South Eastern tier of the United States and are especially prolific in North Carolina. The hot humid growing conditions of those areas stresses the grape which in turn defends itself by producing a tough skin and grape seeds that are high in antixodant Resveratrol and other beneficial health related compounds. All parts of the Muscadine grape have value – the juice and pulp for a refreshing healthful drink and a good source of vitamin C, and the skins and seeds which have the higher concentration of antioxidants.
Muscadines are an excellent contribution to wellness and to a disease prevention diet strategy.
Muscadine grape seeds and skins are highly desirable as a nutraceutical source of antioxidants and polyphenolics.
Muscadine grape seeds and the skins contain the highest concentration of the phenolic complounds (Antioxidants) and the greatest ORAC capacity of the Muscadine grape as a whole. In fact, the total antioxidants in a grain of grape seeds is about twice as much as the grape skins and at least 30 times as in the juice.
The grape seeds also have a high concentration of Resveratrol, which is rich in polyphenols and antioxidants that protects against free radical injury at the cellular level.
CLINICAL STUDIES are continuing to explore the many facets of the Muscadine grape and the benefits of Resveratrol.  Among the many attributes of resveratrol are the following :
  • increased longevity
  • a potent free-radical scavenger
  • a cardioprotectorant
  • reduces myocardial infarction injury
  • an anti-inflammatory agent
  • enhances anti-tumor and anti-cancer activities
  • inhibitor of platelet aggregation
  • as a phytoestrogen - natural replacement for estrogen during menopause
  • reduces risk of osteoporosis and increases bone formation.
In summary, these benefits represent the mechanics for developing many of the major degenerative diseases that plague our industrialized society.
